When your Rheem heat pump stops heating or cooling, what you need is a straight answer on cost, parts, and how fast someone can get to your house. Most Rheem heat pump repairs in Long Beach run between $150 and $650 installed, depending on the part that failed. We stock common Rheem-compatible service parts on our trucks, so many repairs are done same-day or next-day.
Most homeowners only realize something’s wrong when the system starts doing something it never did before: short-cycling, making a new noise, running but not changing the temperature, or tripping a breaker. By the time they call us, the root cause could be anything from a capacitor to a defrost control board to a reversing valve. The trick is knowing which one before you start loading the parts cannon.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
Rheem has built heat pumps under a few different series lines: the Classic, Prestige, and Econet lines are the most common in Long Beach homes right now. Classic Series units (models starting with RP14, RP15) are the workhorses, Prestige (RP17, RP20) adds variable-speed compressors and communicating controls, and Econet is Rheem’s smart-thermostat platform that talks directly to those higher-end systems. The part that fits a Classic RP14 will not always cross over to a Prestige RP20, and that’s where we see a lot of headaches from generic part swapping.
The fastest way to get the right service part is to pull the model number off the data plate, which is usually on the outdoor unit’s corner panel. You want the full string, not just “Rheem.” We match that against the exact revision of your unit, then we make the call on OEM Rheem parts versus quality aftermarket equivalents. OEM parts carry the Rheem name and match to the revision exactly. Quality aftermarket parts from names like Supco or DiversiTech can save real money on common items like capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, and we install them when they meet or beat OEM spec. For proprietary Rheem control boards and communicating parts, we go OEM, full stop. Aftermarket electronics are the one place we don’t gamble.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t spin. That’s usually a failed run capacitor or a seized condenser fan motor. In Long Beach’s salt air, condenser fan motors corrode faster than inland, and we see this constantly in Belmont Shore and Alamitos Beach, where ocean exposure shortens motor life by a third.
- The system blows warm air in cooling mode. This often points to a failed reversing valve, the part that swaps the refrigerant direction between heating and cooling. When the valve sticks mid-position, your system becomes very good at making lukewarm air.
- The unit ice over in summer, then shuts down. That’s the defrost control board or a thermistor that’s gone blind. The system can’t tell when to defrost, so it keeps freezing until the low-pressure switch cuts it off for safety.
- You hear a loud buzzing or clicking from the outdoor unit, and nothing starts. That’s the contactor, the heavy-duty relay that sends 240 volts to the compressor. When its contacts pit and arc, the compressor never sees full voltage and the buzzing is the relay trying to close.
- The heat pump runs but your energy bill jumped noticeably. A failing reversing valve or a compressor losing its ability to pump refrigerant means the system runs longer and harder to hit the same temperature. In Long Beach, where heat pumps run year-round for both heating and cooling, a 30% runtime increase shows up fast on your SCE bill.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s our honest pricing for the parts we replace most on Rheem heat pumps in Long Beach:
- Run capacitor: $150 – $250 installed. The part is cheap, but testing and diagnosis time is real, and we verify there isn’t a second capacitor or a failing motor behind it.
- Contactor: $180 – $320 installed. Price swings on whether we’re swapping a single-pole or double-pole contactor and whether the wire lugs need rework from arcing damage.
- Condenser fan motor: $350 – $650 installed. The motor cost is the bulk of this, and in Long Beach’s salt air we recommend OEM or upgraded sealed-bearing motors that don’t rust out in four years.
- Defrost control board: $250 – $450 installed. This is a board swap, and the board itself is the majority of the cost.
- Reversing valve: $550 – $650 installed. This is the most labor-intensive repair on a heat pump. It requires recovering the refrigerant, brazing the new valve in, pressure testing, and recharging to exact weight. There’s no shortcut.
Every quote is in writing before we open our tool bag. The price on the sheet is the price you pay, and every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the same part fails inside a year, we come back at no charge and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Heat pumps are not a casual DIY project, and the electrical side of this is where we draw the line. The outdoor unit runs on 240 volts, and that’s enough to kill you. There’s a reason the disconnect box has a lockout tab. We’re not being dramatic; we’ve seen blown drivers in control boards from a homeowner probing around with a multimeter on the wrong setting. What you can safely check: is the thermostat calling for heating or cooling? Is the breaker on? Is the outdoor unit clear of leaves, dog hair, and dryer lint blocking the coil? After that, it’s a job for someone with the meters, the refrigerant license, and the wiring diagram printed out, not pulled up on a phone.

FAQs
In Long Beach’s coastal climate, most Rheem heat pumps last 12 to 16 years with regular maintenance. Units within a mile of the ocean tend to fail earlier because salt corrosion attacks the condenser coil and fan motor. Inland Long Beach units regularly go past 15 years.
Some parts can be rebuilt or serviced, like a contactor with cleanable contacts, but for us the deciding factor is whether the repair will last another year. We don’t clean and reinstall a capacitor that’s reading weak; we replace it, because the labor to come back is more than the part. If a repair would be a temporary patch, we’ll tell you so honestly and give you the replacement price instead. Call (562) 512-7423 and we’ll walk you through what we’re seeing.
Most capacitor, contactor, and defrost board replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. A condenser fan motor or reversing valve is a 2 to 4 hour job depending on access and how crusted the fasteners are. We’ll give you a time estimate in writing with your quote, and we don’t leave until the system runs through a full heating and cooling cycle.
We keep common Rheem-compatible parts on our trucks: capacitors, contactors, defrost sensors, fan motors, and universal control boards. Proprietary Rheem communicating boards or Prestige-series parts are usually a next-day order from our supplier. We also carry parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems for good measure. If we don’t have it on board, we’ll tell you before we schedule the return visit, so there’s never a surprise second trip.
Tell me what the system is doing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs – in writing, before I touch anything. Call (562) 512-7423 for a free estimate on your Rheem heat pump repair in Long Beach. Our phones are answered by a real person, 24/7, and the technician who shows up is background-checked, uniformed, and factory-trained on Rheem systems. The price goes in writing before the work starts, and the repair is guaranteed for a full year. That’s how we’ve operated since 2003, and that’s the one part of the job we won’t compromise.
